Soils by Design
Description
Chesterfield Farms LLC/ECOsoils is located in Maryland. They are a manufacturer and producer of blended growing medias. These soils are used throughout the tristate area to improve storm water quality in order to lessen the impact on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
Chesterfield Farms LLC/ECOsoils®, located in Crownsville Maryland, opened in 2004 as a commercial composting facility. Our goal was to operate an organic waste recycling facility which would take in wood waste from tree trimmers, yard waste from landscapers and municipalities, food waste from schools and grocery stores and used them to create high quality compost. This plan was ambitious because Chesterfield Farms would be the first commercial food waste composter in the state of Maryland. The finished product was to be marketed on a wholesale basis.
We started operations on a site in Crofton, Maryland that was once a compost facility but had digressed to a dump site. After eighteen months of cleanup we were capable of receiving 100 to 150 tons of organic waste each day from our customers. However, during this time we learned there was an abundant supply of inexpensive compost on the wholesale market, so we made the decision to enter the soils market in order to create another channel through which we could sell our compost.
Unfortunately, due to regulatory issues coupled with complications surrounding our leased property, we closed our organic operations after three years of growth. Our soils business was not affected by these issues so we shifted our focus from organics to soils. In order to help market our soil division we trademarked ECOsoils® and began to sell our products under that trade name.
Today, Chesterfield Farms/ECOsoils® is partnered with Reliable Contracting Company of Millersville Maryland. We concentrate our efforts on the production of growing media and custom blended soils. We produce soils for hundreds of growing applications concentrated in Baltimore and Washington DC but extending throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Our products are widely accepted by city and county governments, Maryland State Highway, The Army Corp of Engineers, US Federal Government, and the US Park Service. Our specially blended soils are utilized in an array of plantings, green roofs, over-structure applications, structural soil applications and bio retention, for storm water quality. To date we have manufactured, produced, and sold over a half million tons of soils.
All soils manufactured and produced are blended so the finished product is of the utmost quality. Even our standard Topsoil is blended from different textured soils, allowing us to adjust the sand, silt, clay and organic matter to a ratio conducive to vigorous and sustainable plant growth. All of our products undergo continual, strict, and extensive testing by a certified and recognized independent laboratory to ensure our consistent product quality.
Chesterfield Farm’s work impacts the environment around us because our soils are widely used in a full array of storm water quality applications. All of the projects we have supplied over the past eight years have an impact on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Our commitment to quality helps to protect our local environment from harmful runoff, thus making our community a better place.
Chesterfield Farms has predominantly used Cat equipment in its soil production. The current equipment in use is a 950H rubber tire loader, 321DL excavator and D5N LGP dozer. The 950 mixes and blends soils as well as load trucks. The 321 feeds the screening plant, mixes soils along with drying and maintaining stockpiles of soil. The D5N maintains the yard, keeps the topsoil stockpile draining, helps dry topsoil, aides in mixing soils and feeds the 321 with dry topsoil.
Alban Tractor and its great sales staff have helped us significantly by finding us the equipment we need within financial parameters and in a timely manner. They have stood squarely behind their equipment, given excellent product support (from service to parts), and superior customer service from those that answer the phone to our salesman, Chris Kunkel. We value our relationship with Alban as an asset, not just as another vendor.
